In seasons of ideology, Our Town enacts Wilder's double-edged vision, in which human behavior and suffering are treated with benevolence and affection while the shortcomings of the species are criticized and lamented. The play is les satiric than The Happy Journey yet more critical than The lengthy Christmas Dinner and Pullman Car Hiawatha. In a well adapted production, audience members don't know whether to be moved affirmed or despairing during Emily's poignant visit back in time. This conflict takes place not in such a manner much on stage as in the audience's perceptions; as the authors says in the Preface to the three major plays, "Our claim, our trust our despair are in the mind" (12) In Our Toivn, that enacted theatrical mind is evenly and richly, balanced between affection and critique.

In The Skin of Our Teeth (1942) written after Wilder left Chicago, the midwestern uncompounded bodys that marked the plays from The protracted Christmas Dinner to Our Town are more tangential and at the same time more exaggerated. The settings are Excelsior and Atlantic City in strange Jersey, but the perspective is meant to be representatively American in a global words immediately preceding [i]or[/i] following The Antrobuses are a "typical American family" (99); Mr Antrobus was a gardener, and Mr Antrobus "is an highly deserving needlewoman" (98). Son Henry is a "real, clean-cut American boy" (100) These features are no other than slight exaggerations from The Happy Journey and Our Town. However, the practical philosophy of Sabina, the maid "raped home" (104) by dint of Mr. Antrobus, takes us further afield: " . just enjoy your ice-cream while it's in succession your plate" (101). The choruses of earlier plays in The Skin of Our Teeth become bellowing animals, that help raise a "tableau by Raphael" (110) a fortuneteller, and a bingo-caller, among others. Mr Antrobus set downs looking like a Keystone cop Clearly, we are in the world of the carnivalesque, and this is ironic tragicomedy.
