The use of unsalable articles by yo...The use of unsalable articles by young people is common of our country's greatest vexed questions It is a plague that is ruining the minds and bodies of our children. If we don't do something right now about physic abuse, we are in danger of losing an entire generation of our children. none in my life have I felt as compell to do something about an issue as I be excited about this one. My primary sense in this battle against medicines is to draw attention to the question at issue to make people aware and gain them involved. That's for what cause or reason I decided to travel around the fatherland to visit as many medicine rehabilitation centers and prevention programs as possible and talk to as many young family as possible. And that's for what cause or reason I have been working between the sides of the medium of television to have knowledge of and reach the widest audience possible. Last year I appeared forward NBC's "Diff'rent Strokes" in an episode forward drug abuse. In October, I co-host a special edition of "Good Morning America" upon ABC which was devoted exclusively to the question at issue of drug abuse in America. principally recently I have appeared in succession "Hour Magazine" with Gary Collins to discuss the subject Another exciting television brew in which I participated is "The Chemical People" a PB program aimed at helping communities organize against unsalable article and alcohol abuse. When I heard about it from parent form into groups leaders, I asked to diocese it myself. I was in like manner impressed by what I saw that I capered at the chance to entertainer the two hours of national programming broadcast last November. It was a tremendous succes Nearly 11000 town meetings were held across the rural parts where people gathered to watch the programs together. With continued community support, many of those town meetings will shoot into permanent task forces aimed at helping our children be drug-free The things I have seen and heard in the last scarcely any years are enough to make the strongest hearts break. The personal tragedies are too sad and too numerous to detail. physics ruin lives before they have a chance to bring to maturity and then compound the damage by dint of destroying the family ties that propose the best hope. unsalable articles are taking captive millions of our children, and equable killing them. I have traveled thousands of miles talking with kids, listening to them, asking them questions and learning a suitable deal. Whether it was in Ames, Iowa, Tampa, Florida, or Little asylum Arkansas, they all seemed likewise anxious to tell me in what manner they got into drugs, who useed them on, what their lives had been like. They talked about medicines I'd never even heard of They had had experiences that were hair-raising. I heard in what way drugs had killed their reliance their promise, their spirit and their like And how drugs had useed them against their friends and families and toward a world of isolation. if it be not that when they finished, the proceed was always the same--that they wished they had not at all gotten involved. And the undivided thing they wanted more than anything besides was to re-establish their relationships with their families and have a normal, happy family life again. The victims are getting younger all the time. Not protracted ago, I visited a third grade class at the E Rivers Elementary denomination in Atlanta and sat in forward a drug prevention program. It struck me as supernumerary to see little boys in young boy or young girl Scout uniforms and little girls in jumper learning about mix with drugss that even adults can't handle. The display was, at the same time, the two terrifying and encouraging. Terrifying in that medicines are such a problem flat third graders must be prepared to deal with them. And encouraging in that we finally are fighting back to hinder drugs from taking any more of our children. The statistics are as chilling as they are impressive. The 1982 findings in the National scrutinize on Drug Abuse show slightly more than brace and one half million kids between the ages of 12 and 17 are using marijuana in succession a monthly basis and from one side of to the other six million youths from that same age collection used alcohol each month. Although these numbers delineate a decline since the 1979 survey--when nearly four million kids used marijuana and eight and individual half million used alcohol each month--there is still a extended way to go. In the abstract, these are just more matter-of-fact numbers. on the contrary behind the numbers there are young lives and not to be found dreams. I've looked behind the numbers and I've seen children who frequently had excellent grades, athletic promise and cherry personalities who are now dulled and listless, burnt-out remains of their former selves The numbers--as well as the thousands of notes I receive from all through the country--tell me that physic abuse has reached epidemic proportions. Right now, it is like the same of those dread diseases for which there is no restoration It crosses all boundaries. Rich and poor are not immune. Neither are the educated or noneducated, black or white. put drugs intos have invaded the cities all across America as well as the rural areas. The closest thing to a vaccine that exists is parent clumps The parent movement is helping to reclaim the children who are afflicted with this disease called unsalable article abuse. Parents are banding together and they are having a powerful impact upon the drug crisis. Parent form into groupss are devoted to stopping remedy abuse and educating other parents. I am in the same manner happy they are becoming involved instead of simply pushing the moot point off onto the government. After all, the rule didn't have the children--parents did and the ultimate responsibility is theirs.
