When was the last time you reviewed...

When was the last time you reviewed your child's homework? I mean carefully considered at it for correct answers, spelling errors, dogma fragments, general neatness and organization? Does your child really have beneficial study habits? If your answer is "Yes," then this article is not for you. If, however, you know intelligent down in your parental guilt chest you and your child could be doing a better do job-work then read on!

Like you, I am busy with a full-time work at jobs two energetic children, and a tired overworked husband. Time is always stepping in succession my toes, with dinner to fix, laundry to race, baby to bathe, and asking my ten-year-old son "Have you finished your homework?" Direct from televisionland I receive the usual answer "Yes, Mom, I finished it at school" Having dispensed with my parental obligation in the education department, I finish cleaning up the dinner dishes, bring the baby to bed, and collapse with the ease of the family in forehead of the television to recuperate from a extended day.

Then gone out came the national report forward education--A Nation At Risk. After reading several articles in magazines and local newspapers about the lack of academic eminence in the schools, I had to admit my child wasn't exactly straining his brain power. He at no time appeared to do much homework nor did he meditation or read a book forward a regular basis. As a parent, I had to confes that I had become lax about checking across his homework, maintaining regular contact with his teacher, and evaluating his progres based forward my educational expectations. In short, I knew we were in trouble! Like in like manner many working parents, I assumed my son was doing OK in train because his grades were generally serviceable Good enough to hold fast Mom and Dad off his case.

No point in blaming the school--when real academic eminence had to begin at family My first step was to carefully mark my son's behavior. For the same week I turned off the TV and hogsheaded in to him. Here's what I discovered.

Basically, my son had poor thought habits, yet he was maintaining A's and B's in drill Checking with his teacher during a parent colloquy I concluded that in a structur learning environment subject to the direct supervision of the teacher, his performance was acceptable. However, when left to organize his time for in extent term assignments, tests, or impose out additional effort to improve the quality of his work, he was too busy traveling in the fast lane. Reviewing his homework in succession a daily basis, especially the work complet in educate I noted too many misspelled words, several dogma fragments, and illogical and poorly written answers to the essay questions at the completion of science and social studies chapters. Quite ofttimes homework was completed in les than 15 minutes, and the eventuates of this hurried pace became evident in the quality of his work.

exempt time was spent watching television or playing computer games. Reading a work a magazine, or even the comics in the newspaper rarely registered his wave length. Conversationally, his vocabulary was to a high degree good, but he still had put in commotion sounding out printed words or deriving their meaning from the words immediately preceding or following Spelling was below average. Mathematical ability ranked in the superior category according to standardized gymnasium testing scores, but consistent errors resulting from crowding his figures lowered his academic grade. When told at his teacher he could raise his social studies grade from a "B" to an "A" through redoing a report to correct minor writing errors, he was ready to accept the "B" At this point, I realized his work habits were marginal compared to my expectations, and his desire for academic good quality was minimal. Needless to say, we became a family at risk!

Establishing profitable study habits

My primary objective was establishing suitable study habits. My son had decided, however, that this was an innovative order of child harassment. I didn't know that asking him to answer a question in a without fault or blemish or flaw sentence, or telling him to redo a plashy paper would be the beginning of a fresh test of parental survival techniques. His ingenuity in devising classifications of resistance led me to the brink of insanity. However, one time committed to the task, I forged ahead, preparing for subversive sneak attacks as best I could I listed reflection rules and posted them onward the refrigerator:

subject of attention Rules

1. Place a consummate heading on each homework sheet. (Your name, date, teacher's name and subject)

2 Pencil in a margin onward the right side of the paper.

3 Write all replications to essay type questions in full sentences.

4. Correct all spelling errors.

5 Rewrite all plashy classwork and homework.

6 continue all assignments in a note pad.

7 Record all proof grades on a chart thus progress can be evaluated.

8 hold fast a monthly calendar of all upcoming assignments, criterions and reports so work can be scheduled to avoid last-minute rush.

9 Schedule undivided hour of homework time each evening. This includes studying and reviewing the day's work if all written work is complet and outlining chapters to review for tests
