The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has eliminated the 90-day grace period formerly allowed after novel International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9), general Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare belonging to all Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) digests took effect. Beginning October 1 2004 physicians must use the 2005 ICD-9 digests to avoid delayed or denied claims. To avoid similar billing puzzles the 2005 CPT and HCPC digests must be used beginning January 1 2005 The 2005 ICD-9 digests are available online at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/medlearn/icd9code.asp. Revised HCPC collection of lawss soon will be available online at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/medicare/hcpcs/update.asp. Physicians should contact their usual supplier for the 2005 CPT digest book.
