For several decades, microfiche or microfilm effectively solv the issue of storing outdated control records. With microfilm technology, however, data retrieval is oftentimes difficult and the microfilm viewing and printing equipment is not highly user friendly. Instead of using a microfilm, Travis shire in Central Texas has taken replete advantage of a new proces from PSI Technologies, Austin, Texas, that allows computer output reports to be recorded directly from computer arrangements to CD-ROM disks.

In addition to allowing instant acces to records, the of the present day CD-ROM based system also saves the shire more than $30,000 a year according to Travis shire Records Manager Paul Gulick. He says he wanted a combination of parts to form a whole that could meet county requirements of subdued cost, flexibility and high standards of performance and also proffered CD-ROM report processing, indexing and retrieval software.
