The Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Cancer Policy Board (NCPB) has released a novel report on cancer prevention. "Fulfilling the Potential of Cancer Prevention and Early Detection" is available online at http: //www.nap.edu/books/0309082544/ html According to the report, an estimated 100000 of the present day cases of cancer and 60000 deaths could be impedeed each year by 2015 if more Americans used the cancer prevention and early detection knowledge and recommendations generally available. The report give an inkling ofs that to save the mostly lives from cancer, physicians should concentrate their resources upon helping people to stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight and diet, exercise regularly, and restrain alcohol consumption at low to moderate of the same heights The IOM report also reviews the evidence supporting interventions for cancer prevention and early detection, and commends that federal and state legislatures enact and provide funding for enforcement of laws to substantially abridge and ultimately eliminate the adverse public health dependence of cause and effects of tobacco use and exposure; exhibit a national strategy to address the epidemic of obesity, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity; and increase funding for programs that provide primary care to uninsured and low-income people COPYRIGHT 2004 American Academy of Family Physicians COPYRIGHT 2004 Gale Group
