The Minnesota Health Technology Adv...

The Minnesota Health Technology Advisory Committee (HTAC) has issued recommendations upon tumescent liposuction. A summary of the report is available in succession the HTAC Web site at www.health.state.mn.us/htac.

dispute about the safety of liposuction involves several issues, as it was as method of sedation, lidocaine toxicity, fluid balance, physician qualifications, and where the conduct is performed. A census scrutinize of aesthetic plastic surgeons for the period of September 1998 to August 2000 construct the estimated liposuction-related death rate to be 84 by means of 100,000 patients.

The committee conclud that liposuction is generally safe, provided that patients are carefully gooded the facility is properly equipped, and the physician is accredited with special training and experience in liposuction. However, the committee noted that logomachy exists over the use of lidocaine in the tumescent solution and its potential for toxicity.

The committee commended that patients carefully choose the physician and the facility where liposuction is to be performed. Potential patients should ask about the qualifications and experience of the entire surgical team, including the anesthesia staff, and render certain that the facility has the technology to care for them during the conduct and in the event of a complication. The facility should have a contingency plan in the end of an emergency, a full equipped crash cart, staff trained in resuscitation, and a provision for patient transfer to provide acute care.
